Guernsey Hockey Outreach Programme in association with Swoffers
Guernsey Hockey and Swoffers Estate Agents provide a home for budding hockey players, by reaching out to schools on the Island.
The hockey outreach programme covers a huge number of children and is very inclusive, with a focus on encouraging a love of sport. Based around helping children develop fundamental movement skills, gain confidence and try new sports, with the added benefit that some children might just come on down to the hockey club and join us on a Sunday for some more coaching.
Mike Kinder from Guernsey Hockey says “It is hugely rewarding coaching hockey in the primary schools. We are immensely grateful to Swoffers for their sponsorship of our programme which will enable us to continue this fantastic work .
It is wonderful to see the children trying out new skills and gaining confidence. It is amazing the number of children who start out feeling awkward and slightly embarrassed who by the end of 6 weeks are really getting involved in the games.”
Katy Taylor added “I love helping the children become more confident and to see individuals try really hard. The Swoffers outreach programme allows children to try out a sport they wouldn’t necessarily have considered before which I think is a great thing.”
All the hard work in the schools culminates in two tournaments in the spring. We love these days and it gives us the chance to show the children our fantastic hockey facility at Footes Lane and for them to show us their new found skills. The tournaments are always played in a really good spirit.
Swoffers have kindly extended their support for the outreach programme for a further three years.
