Excellent opener to Guernsey Under-15 HA Cup campaign
Guernsey’s PWC Under 15’s opened their Hockey Association Cup campaign with an emphatic ‘home’ win on Saturday. England Hockey rules meant that the ‘home’ ground was in Bournemouth where the boys entertained Gloucestershire side Wotton-under-Edge.
Despite playing for the first time on an unfamiliar and bouncy hybrid surface the Sarnians’ started well and it was clear within the first 10 minutes that they had the edge with Wotton only able to attack ‘on the break’. In the 12th minute Adam Clark took charge of a loose ball in midfield, drove into the circle and slotted the ball into the goal. Guernsey continued to pressed forward with 10 minutes of the half remaining Andrew Clark beat two players but his well hit shot was thwarted by the upright.
Guernsey continued to attack and were awarded a penalty stroke following a goalmouth infringement by the Wotton keeper. Adam Clark flicked the ball in off the post to giveGuernsey a well deserved 2 nil lead at half time. After the break the Guernsey changed formation, Captain Tom Still moved into midfield, and earnt a penalty corner after just a minute’s play. The corner resulted in a goalmouth scramble and Still’s flick went in off a Wotton defender.
Guernsey continued to run the game but did not have the experience to unlock the Wotton defense. “We did not exploit the wide areas well enough and we kept trying to go through the centre rather than get around the back. The lads played well and we are hopeful of making enough improvements in time for the next round” said Assistant Coach Stephen Eulenkamp
