Under 17 Girls’ retain the Inter Insular trophy
December 8, 2008
Guernsey successfully defended their Under 17 Girls’ Inter Insular Trophy on Saturday, with a 3-0 victory.
Guernsey piled on early pressure and opened the scoring with a well finished goal from centre forward, Chloe Dawes. The Greens continued to enjoy the majority of the possession over the 1st half but had to wait until a minute before half time for their 2nd goal. This came courtesy of some confident link play between 14 year old Frankie Stewart and the more experienced Elizabeth Wray. Stewart’s positioning on the left post, saw the home side go into the break 2-0 ahead.
Jersey came back out, full of determination to stifle their opponents passing game. Their defence was tenacious and brave and made Guernsey work very hard for their attacking opportunities. The reliable defensive combination of Ellie Deans and Kelley Cameron ensured that any breaks Jersey made, were relatively short lived. Cameron used the pace of her pass from deep in her own half, to initiate a counter-attack that resulted in a Megan Stewart goal.
In the last few minutes of the game, Jersey started to apply more pressure to the Guernsey defence, resulting in some end to end play . Jersey had several shots on goal that went wide, leaving Guernsey Goalkeeper, Lucy Sharratt relatively untested throughout the game. Team captain, Pippa Inderwick was unlucky not to score with her hits from several short corners .
Guernsey undoubtedly deserved their 3-0 victory, despite a spirited display from Jersey. This was the 4th straight victory for the Girls’ Under 17 Team.
