PWC Under-15 Boy’s Storm to 19-0 HA Victory
December 2, 2008
Guernsey’s PWC under-15s got off to a flying start in their bid for the HA plate with an emphatic 19-0 victory at
Southampton on Sunday.
Last month the travelling greens had been derailed by Teddington HC in the main cup competition, but this time proved their class and determination to easily overcome their Hampshire based opponents, who, having been beaten 12-0 in their cup match, were equally as eager to progress.
The confident Sarnians started the game well and created a number of promising moves in the right hand channel early on. Therefore, it didn’t take long for the greens to take the lead and it came only minutes in, when a combination of skill and pace from right-winger JP Payne, followed by a ball into the box, resulted in a comfortable finish for Tony Paluch at the far post.
It was more of the same to come, and the forwards continued to expose gaps in the Southampton defence, and with only 8 minutes gone it was Jack Curran’s turn to neatly slot the ball home and double the lead.
The
Guernsey midfield found themselves with time and space, and a slick pass from captain Nick Robilliard allowed Payne to score a tremendous strike himself from far out. Flowing passes and clever movement meant the Sarnians were now dominating the fixture, and several more goals came in quick succession for Paluch and Curran upfront midway through the first half.
Fast link-up play between Zak Damarell and Payne down the right, generated chance after chance for the forwards, this pressure on their weakening defence forced a penalty flick 30 minutes in. Curran stepped up, relaxed, and powered the ball into the top corner.
The green defence rarely came under scrutiny, and goalkeeper Harry Player failed to touch the ball in the entire first half. Meanwhile, the impressive greens continued to attack and Zak Damarell and Adam Wakeford joined in the action, both scoring precise finishes in the D.
To cap the first half,
Guernsey revealed their secret weapon and Robilliard precisely executed a stunning drag flick from a Paluch short corner, making the half time score 10-0 to the greens.High spirited and finally acclimatized to the freezing cold weather, the travellers showed no signs of tiring and continued to torment the opposition defence.
Early on in the second half, Andy Clark demonstrated his skill and calm, driving passed several players and slotting the ball home. The forward trio of Paluch, Payne and Curran persisted in exploiting the gaps in the attacking half and created many more chances, each scoring another goal. The game continued in a similar fashion and all the pressure fell on the young
Southampton keeper. After an hour or so, Damarell scored arguably the best goal of the game with a reverse stick strike from a seemingly impossible angle to make it 15-0.
Against the run of play, green goalkeeper Harry Player, was forced to make one excellent sliding save as a result of a fast
Southampton counter attack. In the last 10 minutes, the home side defended in vain as Paluch scored two more simple ‘tap–ins’ to seal the victory and secure a place in round 3 for the Sarnians.
The victorious
Guernsey team is scheduled to play their next round match in the New Year and similar performances could mean they go far in the plate competition.
