Coaching Awards

For further information on coach awards please contact Guernsey Hockey for details of when courses are available.

Level 1 VRQ Coaching Assistant Award
The Level 1 course will result in you becoming an accredited Level 1 coach. England Hockey has successfully trained over 15,000 Level 1 coaches to date and this number is increasing all the time.

This is the minimum qualification for those who are involved in hockey coaching sessions working under supervision – for example, a Level 2 coach may be working on another part of the pitch and will assume responsibility for the session.

Level 2 VRQ Coach Award
This is the qualification for those who wish to coach the techniques of the game beyond an introductory level and apply them to tactical play and the coaching of teams. It is only suitable for those with experience of coaching hockey. A prerequisite for this course is the England Hockey Level 1 Coach Award.

Those licensed at Level 2 will be able to coach the full range of techniques and skills in the modern game and may take responsibility for other coaches involved in delivering a programme in a safe and enjoyable way. It is recommended that the coaching of junior county teams or adult teams should not be undertaken by coaches who have not achieved the Level 2 Award. It is compulsory for all Level 2 coaches to have an Emergency 1st Aid Certificate and have attended the scUK Good Practice and Child Protection Course or equivalent training.

Level 3 VRQ Award
This is the qualification for those who wish to coach tactical play and team play to a more advanced level. The prerequisite to attend the Level 3 course is to have completed the Level 2 coach award. The course is only suitable for those who have experience of coaching hockey in a variety of settings. Ideally a club head coach would have the Level 3 Award.

Level 4 Coach Award
This award will be available in a modular format. The criteria and syllabus are currently being developed along with the introduction of the National Coaching Certificate. Development is progressing well.

Coaches wishing to take a Level 4 course need to be coaching a National League club and/or be involved with junior international teams with a view to progressing to senior teams. Coaches need a background in sports science, management of a team of coaching staff and extensive technical and tactical knowledge.
